Dispatch from Lima: Dia del Cómic Festival and the Peruvian Comics Renaissance

This past weekend at Día del Cómic Festival in Lima, Peru, I had the pleasure of representing Incubator Productions and collaborating with Fabricio Rivas Mar, the visionary creator behind Inka Comics. We shared a table that became a lively hub for comics rooted in both North and South American traditions. Fabricio’s titles like Mundo Monstruo and Bestial captivated readers with their fusion of Andean characters, occult mythos, and Inka spirituality—a deeply local storytelling lens that still resonates universally.
This event also marked the debut of the first printed ashcan edition of The Tourist. Despite being in English, the comic received an enthusiastic response. I had the chance to connect with a wide range of comics fans and fellow creators who were intrigued by my use of traditional black-and-white media (ink and paper). Many attendees pored through my portfolio, asking about my process and influences. The engagement was so energizing that I’ve already begun planning a second ashcan—this time, a Peruvian chapter of The Tourist that reflects the experiences and adventures of living here in Peru.
Throughout the weekend, I met some incredible creators and publishers. One standout was Nullstone Comics, an emerging publisher with a high-quality line of floppies and a fresh, diverse approach to storytelling. I’m excited to continue conversations with them and explore collaboration opportunities.
On Sunday, Fabricio and I presented to a larger audience about a localization partnership between Inka Comics and Incubator Productions. The goal? To offer translation and lettering services that bridge English-language comics with Latin American readers—and vice versa. We noticed a recurring theme: while some creators already work in English, there’s real demand for professional language support to fully bring their vision to global markets. Incubator is ready to meet that need.
Another exciting development: we made some strong leads for launching comics and illustration workshops here in Peru. Watch this space—Incubator’s educational series is coming soon, tailored for aspiring creators in the region.
Personally, one of the biggest honors was meeting Peruvian cartooning legends Antonio Torres, Dionisio Torres, and Karry. These encounters were brief but meaningful, and I’m looking forward to future conversations over coffee to better understand the legacy and impact of Peruvian comics history.
As I left the festival, I carried with me a deep appreciation for Peru’s vibrant, close-knit comics scene. There’s a we’re-in-this-together spirit among creators—an ambition to share stories that matter, and a hunger to connect with readers and fellow artists alike. I believe this energy deserves to be seen internationally. It’s not hard to imagine a traveling exhibition of Peruvian comics—something Incubator would be proud to help bring to life.
