The World of Webtoon with Dev Solovey and Ryan Miller

It's time for another round of the Incubator Interview Series! Back in the winter of 2024, Carina had the great opportunity to connect with two webcomics creators, Dev Solovey and Ryan Miller. The three chatted about what drew them to comics, how they got into writing and illustrating, and projects in progress.

Dev Solovey and Ryan Miller Interview

Both Ryan and Dev provided tons of insight into their process of character creation, constructing narratives, and exploring nontraditional avenues in publishing, such as platforms like Webtoon! They both also expressed the importance of connecting with other comic creators--the two of them actually met in the online sphere, which led to a great working partnership. As we all know, the world of comics is collaborative, so find your people, wherever they may be!

Something else worth keeping in mind from this interview is to let your aesthetic and style grow. Dev and Ryan both discussed the ways that they've found their genre niches over time within the medium, and that it takes time to develop that aesthetic for yourself.

One more thing to keep in mind from the many fantastic takeaways from this interview is that there is no wrong way to "do" comics. In the past, webcomics would get flak for not being as authentic as a good ol' fashion bound volume, but the digital age is on the rise and Webtoon is king. Both of our interviewees touted the importance of indie publishing to a medium like comics, and that small presses and online platforms provide a great jumping off point for folks just starting out. When the field looks intimidating, starting with a smaller audience and a smaller press can be a little less scary, and you can still develop a dedicated fanbase, whether that's ten people or ten thousand.

Thanks so much to Dev (@devsolovey on Instagram) and Ryan (@ramillerart on Instagram) for the time they took to sit down for this interview (and the patience in getting it posted--big things have been coming from our team lately!). We're grateful to get this glimpse into the webcomic world, up close and personal.
